Word ListsTeachers use words from standardized word lists to make flashcards for their students to use in the classroom. On this site you will find these lists for levels from Pre-Kindergarten to Third Grade.
Practicing and reviewing these words can help improve your child’s reading and fluency rates. These words are also known as sight words, since the goal is for your child to know them by sight and not have to read them letter by letter or sound them out because they are not known by your child. I have labeled the lists as they are by the sources they came from, however if your child’s teacher expresses concerns over your child’s reading or fluency rates, please start with a group from a lower grade level. Doing this will help to build your child’s confidence, since there will be some words they know and are comfortable with.
I have also added a page for Special Word Groups. These are words that have been catorgorized by the connection they have, such as: Days of the Week Months of the Year Number Words Color Words Holidays It is also important to make certain your child knows what the words on these lists mean. If not, it will affect their comprehension of what they reading, which also can affect their reading and fluency rates because they have to slow down to think about a word they do not understand. These words could be used to make the flashcards mentioned on the Reading Activities page.
