Suggested Reading Lists

The suggested reading lists on my site will be categorized by grade level.

I have found book suggestions for pre-kindergarten through the middle school grades.

As always, understand the category the books are in is just a suggestion.

If your child is in kindergarten, but doesn't like the books on the kindergarten group, go up to the first grade list or to the pre-kindergarten list and find books that interest them.

Also, if your child is in second or third grade, but would like to read a book on the first grade level, let them! Reading books on a lower grade level helps to build fluency. It can also lead to finding topics and other books your child would enjoy reading.

Reading is meant to be fun and enjoyable, our children have so much that they HAVE TO read for school, let them read what they enjoy when they have the choice!

Now, if they are struggling with what they have to read, you can help build their confidence by finding a book about the same topic on a lower reading level, then re-visit the reading on their grade level.

If your child would like to read a book suggested for a higher grade, just make sure they are mature enough for the content of the book. For example, your 5th grader may be able to read a book on the high school level, but not be mature enough for the story. A way to help with this decision is to preview the book yourself and help guide them through the book or to another book better suited for them.

These lists can also help your child find different books to read and enjoy. For example, if they enjoy books by a certain author, have them look for other types of books written by that author.

If they enjoy reading about a certain topic, have them do a search at the library to find even more books about that topic.
