Make reading everyday a priorty for success!
Reading everyday with your children will help them to succeed in school and in life! Even if it's just 5 or 10 minutes, make the most of this time with your children.
It's been proven that children who see their family members read will be more interested in reading themselves!
When your children are infants, you can read aloud the newspaper or a magazine article - they don't care what you're reading about, they just love to hear your voice!
As they begin to speak more, point out letters and the sounds they make.
As they get older and are learning words, continue to read picture books aloud and talk about the pictures.
When you move on to books that have more words, still talk about the pictures, they tell a lot of the story, also.
Continue to share this time of reading together with your children even after they can read on their own.
You can read a page or a paragraph and then have your child read next, and discuss the story as you go along.
Also, reading with funny voices for the characters can make this time together even better!
Imagine how much fun it would be for your child to read a book where they are the main character! Their friends could be characters in the book! Pets could also join in the fun! I have found this fantastic site where they can create such a book for your child!
Reading everyday also includes reading magazines. Do you remember Highlights Magazine? Imagine how much fun it would be to share that great magazine with your child! Imagine the enjoyment your child will have in receiving their own magazine in the mail!
Highlights for Children is the world’s best-loved educational magazine, offering Hidden Pictures, stories, articles, and tons of craft ideas for kids!

Something I noticed the other day at the library was the abundance of children's books on CD!
So I had the thought for parents who would like their children to enjoy more books, why not listen to them in the car?
The child can hold the book and read along with the CD. There are even chapter books on CDs! They can listen on the way to school or daycare and on the way home.
This would also work well on a road trip!
I've shared before about how I love that teachers work well together and I have found a great site written by another teacher to share with you.

Five Finger Test to Choose the Book that’s the Best!
To help your child enjoy reading everyday on their own, they should choose the books they want to read.
This is a fun and easy way for your child to choose a book to read for themselves. You can also help them choose by listening to them read from the book.
1. Choose a book you are interested in.
2. Open the book to a page that is mostly print.
3. Start reading from the top of the page, when you come
to a word you don’t know, raise a finger.
4. When you come to the end of the page, look to see
how many fingers you have up.
5. This is how to decide if the book is too easy, a
challenge you can handle, or a challenge to read on your
own:
0-1 fingers - too easy
2-5 fingers - a challenge you can handle
6 or more fingers – the book would be a challenge to read on your own.
