The Importance of Reading for Life!

The importance of reading as a tool you use for life begins at a very young age. As you have grown, you used this skill all through your day to gather and interpret information in print and in technology.

Children who see the adults in their life make reading a prioty become lifelong readers themselves. This includes parents, grandparents, and other adults who are a part of their lives.

This begins with reading to your children when they are babies and continuing to read to them and with them once they have started reading themselves. It's OK if you share the same book over and over again, the more you read to your children will give them a great advantage once they start school.

As an example of the importance of reading in our family, I still remember my son's Kindergarten teacher telling me how Jason recited the story of the Three Little Pigs on his first day of school!

The Adventure Begins...

This adventure begins when your children are babies. It starts with family members talking to infants all through their day.

Here are some ways to share the importance of reading with your young ones:

Talk to them as you go about your tasks for the day.

Tell them about your day, read an article with them from a newspaper or magazine. They love to hear your voice and you get the chance to read something that interests you!

At this young age the emphasis should be on your baby hearing the language.

The Adventure Continues...

Then as your child gets older they can "read" and build language skills by describing the pictures and associating the words with the pictures.

Later, they will identify letters, then notice how the letters make words. Then they will discover when you put words together you have sentences and those sentences are put together to make a story!

The Adventure Goes on Step by Step....

I'm building this site as I would teach a child to read, from beginning with letters, then words, sentences, and stories. In fact, I just added a story I wrote using a lot of the sight words on the Pre-kindergarten Wordlist.

That's why I have pages with sight word lists on them, and other pages with activities on how to work with the sight words to help your child build up their reading and fluency rates.

If your child gets tired while reading, working with high frequency words will build up their word recognition skills and the more words they know, the better they will read.

I have added pages about genres or types of books, book lists, and books about reading.

I also have a page of other helpful sites about book reviews and reading that I recommend for you to visit.

So be sure to check back often since this is a true work in progress!
